Trainspotting notes

PRE-PRODUCTION NOTES

TRAINSPOTTING

·      Made in 1996, very relevant at the time it came out
·      Drugs, guns, fighting
·      Lower class
·      Directed by Danny Boyle
·      Budget – £3.5 million, mid to low budget film

If making a film from a book, you need to ask permission from the author to allow you to produce a film from the book. The amount paid to author also needs to be discussed; Royalty payment.

Investment is key. Channel 4 to fund trainspotting as more suited. Issues with rights over film had to be sorted for channel 4 to fund. Deal was eventually done for two percent of the films budget (£30,000), and Noel Gay backing out of hands-on duties in exchange for a share of the profits and name check on credits.

Danny Boyle did not want to create a film that cost a lot of money.
Pre-production can now begin where a team comes on board to start planning and making the film.

PRE-PRODUCTION:
Pre-production is what is known as the run up period before the film, and it includes planning. The main part of pre-production in this case is the story board.  ‘Pre -production lasts for 4-7 weeks depending on your budget, and in that time casting, location scouting, working with the art department and costumes all needs to be sorted.’ – Danny Boyle. The producer is in charge of all of this.

Casting directors play a key roll in film production. They are responsible for negotiating with agents, talent scouting and setting up auditions. There is a wish list for actors they want in their films. They need to find these actors, ask them if they want to act in the film and then discuss payment with these actors. Once they have the actors, the actors are able to rehearse and read through their script; They learn more about their characters.

Location set in a flat in Glasgow despite film being set in Edinburgh.

Keeping costs down by not using full space. Good relationship with owner of place they are using to film to try and make costs lower.

90% of costumes is cheap clothing bought from places like charity shops.
